What is Counselling?
A: Counselling is a relationship developed between client and therapist which allows individuals or couples come together with a Counsellor to seek solutions to a specific or general problem, to learn new coping skills, to seek an answer about a life dilemma, to function more maturely or to clarify what is ailing them. It is a place to reflect and explore issues and ensure continued good mental health and well being.

How long can I expect to be in therapy?
A: Therapy can be as long or as short as you wish, I offer short term solution focused therapy which is usually 6-12 sessions and I also offer open ended long term work which is initially can be about a specific issue but often becomes a more in-depth learning of oneself.

What happens in a counselling session?
A: Counselling is your time, yours to talk about and explore anything that you choose, this may differ from week to week but central to the therapy is the thought that we are working together enabling you to have a better understanding of why and how you impact and are impacted by those around you.

But do I really need therapy?

Is counselling confidential?
A: For the relationship to develop and be of use to you it is important that you feel comfortable and relaxed in the knowledge that what ever is spoken in the counselling room remains in the counselling room, there are however times when this code of confidentiality maybe broken. The first is during supervision, it is good ethical practise for all counsellors to have regular supervision and be abel to get feedback from their supervisor. Supervision is about improving our practise and how we work. No names are mentioned and the focus is on the therapist and how they are relating to the client. Not the client and their issues.
The second time when confidentiality maybe broken is if there is a risk of the client harming themselves or others, the counsellor would then have an ethical duty to inform the relevant person (usually GP). as the client you would always be informed if this was going to happen

If I decide to begin counselling towhat will I be committing myself?
A: The decision to undergo counselling is an important step which needs to be taken seriously for it does involve serious commitments. The more you are able to reflect and process outside of the sessions then the more you will be able to get from the sessions themselves
